At the start of the 2017 season, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick made a decision to change the mindset with which his team approaches things. They took the focus off the result and made it about the journey.

Hardwick said:
“It’s funny when you go to those reunions (premierships), you don’t speak about the game at all. It’s all about the stories and the mateship and the camaraderie and that sort of stuff. And I thought to myself, why can’t we have that sort of thing now? I don’t care about our win/loss, I want blokes to go away and speak about the fun they had in season 2017.”

Richmond’s results since adopting this mindset speak for themselves, and I think we can all learn from it. They decided on their values, the things that are most important to them, and they decided to live them now.

Former Westpac CEO Gail Kelly talks about what happens when you fail to do this:

“I very often come across people who are at the pinnacle of their career, they are immensely successful, they’ve climbed the mountain, they are the best they can be in their job or their profession and yet they are deeply unhappy.
If you get to an environment where that gets talked about, these people cry: grown men my age and more, in tears. Because of what they have lost along the way: a relationship, a partnership, they may not be connected to their children, maybe they’ve lost their health, maybe they’ve got no friends. They have no interests, they’ve lost sight of who they are, their spirituality, their inner person.
Do not let this happen to you. You need to make sure you live a whole life, which means be really clear on the priorities in your life and invest in them all the way.”
